I det kinesiska kommunistpartiets språkbruk fungerar ”grön” (绿色) både som en hänvisning till miljöpolitiken och som ett retoriskt verktyg för att signalera politisk likriktning med    partiets prioriteringar. I inhemska politiska sammanhang används detta attribut som en måttstock för hållbarhetsutvärdering – dock utan mätbara kriterier, såsom ”konceptet om grön styrning” (绿色执政理念).

I utrikespolitiken kan attributet fungera som ett stöd för olika anspråk. Ett exempel är att hållbarhet är ett kärnvärde i Xi Jinpings Belt and Road Initiative, och har använts för att understödja projekt med tvivelaktiga miljömässiga konsekvenser. Ett annat exempel är argumentet att västerländska tullar på kinesiska produkter inom förnybar energi utgör ”grön protektionism” som undergräver äkta miljöskydd.
